IN-FORM Elliot Hawkins shot a magnificent seven-under-par nett 64 to win Maldon Golf Club's Coronation Cup.

The 19-year-old followed up his success in the club's last singles competition, the Captain's Cup, to claim victory in the historic trophy.

Hawkins' score, which saw his handicap cut by three shots to 13, saw him win by seven clear shots in the full handicap medal trophy, originally presented to the club in 1911 to mark the coronation of King George V.

Overall, it was another successful weekend for Maldon GC's younger members.

Four players returned scores of nett 71, to fight out the other top-five places on countback.

In-form 21-year-old Billy Mason (3) was runner-up, to consolidate his lead at the top of the Order of Merit league table. The youngest competitor, ten-year-old Marley Read, secured third place with his nett 71.

Mick Kempen was placed fourth while Marley's father, Martin Read, grabbed fifth spot.

Maldon GC's weekly, nearest-the-pin prizes were a real Father's Day family affair.

Darren Mason was victorious on the par-three fifth/14th hole while his son, competition runner-up Billy Mason, won the prize for the closest second shot to the par-four sixth/15th.

Maldon GC's men's Guest Day was a resounding success with a capacity field of 32 pairs competing in a 27-hole, betterball stableford event, with the course presented in superb condition.

The overall winners with a 27-hole score of 67 points were Darren Mason and Mark Thompson (Benton Hall).

Three pairs returned aggregate scores of 66 points.

In second place on countback were Graham Guthrie and his guest David Jenkins.

Paul Holland and his guest Colin Ward (The Warren) were third, while Bill Guthrie and his guest Mike Kettle (Colchester) finished fourth.

Maldon's ladies competed for their Captain's Cup.

Lady captain Mary King was an appropriate winner with 28 points ahead of runner-up Sue Gardiner (26 points) and third-placed Jean Roberts (23 points).

Maldon GC's men's seniors section contested the Fred Naylor Bowl, a full handicap stableford competition.
