CHAIRMAN Alan Coker says there is a sense of optimism around Maldon Cricket Club.

The Drapers Farm side begin their Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship division one campaign on Saturday.

First up is a home match against Sudbury, followed by a trip to Mildenhall on April 25.

Both Suffolk sides finished in the top six last year, so it represents a tricky start for Coker’s team.

However, he says the players are ready and looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“We’re feeling very positive, as always at the start of the season,” said the Maldon chairman.

“It’s not going to be an easy start.

“Sudbury are one of the teams I expect to be pushing near the top of the table.

“They’ve added to their squad with a couple of players from Bury St Edmunds, who had been playing in the East Anglian Premier League.

“Mildenhall also finished in the top six last season, so we know how tough it’s going to be.

“However, that’s the nature of the beast and we’re looking forward to it.”

Maldon have a new overseas player-coach, to replace previous hit Jamie Glenn.

The New Zealander sparkled during his three years with the club – becoming one of the leading all-rounders in division one – but is not returning this season.

Instead, Australian Robb MacMillan, a spin bowler from Tasmania, has joined the ranks and will be looking to hit the ground running.

Maldon also welcome back Freddie Clark.

The top-order batsman and opening bowler was previously with the club in 2007 before spending a few years with Shepherd Neame Essex League side Colchester and East Essex.

“Robb has arrived in the country and we’re looking forward to seeing him play,” said Coker.

“We’re also delighted to welcome back Freddie.

“We’ve also managed to retain all of last season’s players, apart from Jamie, so it’s a strong squad.”

Maldon, who finished fourth from bottom in each of the last two seasons, have been fine-tuning their preparations in net sessions since February.

The side will again be skippered by Coker’s son, Martyn.
