MARATHON runners will be passing through the Maldon district this weekend for the fourth annual Saltmarsh75 competition.

The Saltmarsh75 is a two day ultra-marathon along the coast of the Maldon district with more than 150 competitors taking part in the gruelling 75 mile trek.

Competitors will be walking and running the distance, beginning in South Woodham Ferrers on Saturday at 9am, competitors will follow the River Crouch until it meets the North Sea, before turning left through the remote Dengie Marshes to Bradwell-on-Sea at the mouth of the Blackwater Estuary.

An overnight stop at Steeple will offer brief respite until the morning, when the participants will cover the remaining 37 miles through Maldon, Goldhanger and Tollesbury until the final challenge, five miles around the edge of Old Hall Marshes nature reserve, finishing at the hamlet of Salcott-cum-Virley.

The competitors are set to pass through Burnham on Saturday between 9.30am and 1pm, and through Promenade Park in Maldon on Sunday between 8.30am and 11am.

The event has previously seen great support for local residents alongside family and friends of competitors. All are welcome to come and show their support.
