A PAIR of fundraising sisters have scaled mount Snowdon in a bid to raise hundreds of pounds in memory of their great-nan.

Abi and Ellie Ribbon, of Southminster, tackled the mountain path in winds of up to 80mph on Saturday to raise money for Dementia UK.

Their great-nan Anne Dillon died two years ago after battling the condition.

Ten-year-old Abi and Ellie, 13, only decided to take on the challenge three weeks ago and set themselves a £150 target.

But they have now raised more than £720 after setting up a Just Giving page.

Proud mum Lisa and dad Ronnie accompanied the girls to the summit.

Lisa said: “My nan died of dementia and I was really close to her.

“The girls used to go and see her in the home and they wanted to raise some money.

“We didn’t expect it to be as bad. We got to the half way mark and the rangers were saying go back because the weather was really bad.

“We got up as far as we could and thought it was time to give up but we were only half an hour from the top.”

Abi, who was worried she would have to hand back the money if she didn’t complete the challenge, convinced her parents to keep going and they managed to reach the top.

“It was really, really hard,” she said. “She was so determined.

“We had done a few walks beforehand but nothing prepares you for it. Then there is the weather as well – the winds were getting up to 80mph.

“I don’t even know where the idea came from and we didn’t know what we were letting ourselves in for.”
