MAYLAND village descended into an aquatic warzone on Sunday as hundreds took to Lawling Park with water pistols.

Around three hundred villagers arrived at the park, off Katonia Avenue, as red team took on blue in a huge water fight.

The fight was planned by Dan Williams and friend Jay Stammers. It all came out of “banter” between the two.

Dan said: “It all started last year as banter between me and Jay saying we were going to soak each other, which never actually happened.

“So a few weeks back I said ‘I’ll tell you what, red team vs blue team, lets see who can get the most people’

“Jay put it on Facebook and before we knew it, we each had an army.”

The village certainly responded, as a huge number came out to join one team or the other.

Dan said that Mayland was unique in getting this sort of turnout for an event like this.

“I honestly don’t think it would have worked anywhere else,” he said.

“Mayland is such a tight, friendly community. It will only be bigger next year, especially if we advertise it this time.

“I’m sure surrounding villages will get involved, I will still be leading the reigning champions, the blue team, and I’m sure Jay will still be leading the reds.”

So is this going to become an annual event?

“I believe so yes, people are already talking about next years one.

“We all created a little bit of history in our village on Sunday and if it becomes an annual thing then everyone that took part today can sile knowing they created that.

“More importantly, life is too short and after losing my dad at a young age, I will think of that special hour we all spent with our children, families and friends today, and the memories we have just made.”
