CROWDS watched on as vintage aircraft took to the skies over a Great War aerodrome.

A variety of planes including the famed Sopwith Snipe performed displays at Stow Maries Aerodrome on Friday night.

The event formed part of a series of successful evening flying events that the aerodrome has put on.

Following a minute’s silence for the victims of the Nice tragedy, the program took off to a thrilling start with the rarely seen Ryan STA.

It continued into the evening with displays by a trio of the much-loved Stampe and a thrilling display of formation flying and good old fashioned barnstorming by The Tiger Club Turbulent Display Team.

Peter Martin, Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome Trust Chairman, said: “It’s great to see the aerodrome thriving with enthusiastic visitors and pilots. We love showing the aerodrome at its best, and all our visitors – be they families or enthusiasts – always have a great time. Seeing the aircraft at the close of the day, as the sun drops over the field, is also a very special experience.”

He added: “We would like to thank the local community, pilots, The WW1 Aviation Heritage Trust, and our hard working volunteers for continuing to support our events which are enjoyed by so many.”

Throughout 2016 Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is hosting an informative and educational programme of commemorative activities for the centenary of the First World War.

The next flying event is on July 30 and 31.
