HUNDREDS battled against the weather to pay tribute to the Armed Forces at Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome on Saturday.

The weather was unable to dampen spirits as members of the public, veterans and serving members of the forces came together at the WW1 airfield for Armed Forces Day.

A flag raising ceremony began the day at 1pm.

There were then displays of military vehicles, guided tours of the Stow Maries Aerodrome, airside activities and a series of challenges for the cadet forces.

There was also a flypast by a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire.

The event was organised by Maldon District Council and Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome Trust.

Councillor Peter Elliott, Chairman of Maldon District Council, said: “We are grateful to the Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome Trust for once again kindly hosting this event at Stow Maries Aerodrome.

“This site is unique, of the 250 aerodromes built during the First World War, just ten still exist of which Stow Maries is the only one to have remained almost untouched since the war was ended in 1918.

“It is a fitting setting in which we recognise the contribution of our Armed Forces and civilian personnel as part of this National Armed Forces Day.”
