Get the door, it’s Domino’s- heading for Burnham.

The pizza giant was granted approval for a store in St Mary’s Church Hall, Station Road, last Tuesday, after months of speculation about whether the takeaway would be given permission to open its first restaurant in the area.

Previously, residents craving Domino’s would have needed to travel to Maldon for their fix, but now the pizza outlet will be right on their doorstep, bringing 25 new jobs to the town.

Despite criticism of the application when discussed by the town council, over fears about how smell and noise from the takeaway would be dealt with, planning officers at Maldon District Council agreed the application would go forward.

Town councillor Bob Calver said: “Personally I think the proof will be in the pudding.

“There were lots of reservations from local people, we had the same issues with Tesco, but it’s very well-used.

“If it’s going to be a success, it’s up to the people of Burnham to vote with their money.

“There’s a difference between what people think they want and what they spend their money on.

“If the people of Burnham want a Domino’s, it might upset other traders, but they will patronise it.”

Domino’s had been asked to show how it would manage noise from customers and delivery drivers and to redesign the shop front, in extra details requested by Maldon District Council, before giving the go-ahead.

The outlet is to open from 11am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 10.30am on Sundays and bank holidays.

There are six conditions attached to the approval, including the submission of detailed drawings of the new windows, shopfront and door for approval before building work commences.

The pizza chain is urging residents to sign up for jobs as pizza chefs, delivery drivers or store assistants.

Communications manger Helen Tosney-Collins said: “We’re really excited to have found such a great location and premises, right in the heart of the community.

“We are looking to recruit from within the local area and want to deliver more than just great pizza to the community.”
