Children from Maldon Primary School’s school council joined vice chairman of Maldon District Council, Henry Bass, at the council offices to hear more about what goes on at committee meetings, and how decisions are made which affect them and their families.

The event last Tuesday was an extension of the current programme of PowerPoint presentations councillor Bass is offering to Year 6 pupils in all of the primary schools in the district where he gives an overview of the roles and responsibilities of the council.

Councillor Bass said: “The council is keen to reach out to young people in particular to explain how it operates.

"The PowerPoint presentation has been well received by a number of schools in the district with the children asking plenty of questions.

"The visit to the council I hope has sparked an interest in what the council does which they can talk about with their friends and families.”

Deputy headteacher of Maldon Primary School, Lea Tyler, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our children to find out about how democracy works and enabled them to link this with the work they do as School Councillors.”
