New powers to tackle antisocial behaviour and dangerous dogs have been welcomed.

Spencer Clarke, community safety manager at Maldon District Council, told a committee of councillors the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 cut out the red tape in pursuing nightmare neighbours and dangerous dogs.

He told the Community Services Committee how the new measures introduced under the act can also be used to combat cannabis smoking and even straying livestock.

The measures include community protection notices (CPN).

Mr Clarke explained the CPN has three stages, a warning issued, notice issued and then sanction.

He said: "Notices have to be clear and specific, people have to understand what's expected of them with a very clear timescale."
