Funeral directors have lodged an appeal after controversial plans were turned down.

Adam and Greenwood Funeral Home had sought permission to turn a shop into a funeral directors in Maldon High Street, but plans were turned down in October last year.

The proposal had come under fire by residents of nearby Baker Mews retirement complex who branded it “insensitive”, saying they did not want to look out of the window and see coffins and hearses.

Maldon district councillors rejected the plan, citing a “high level of objection from the local community”.

An appeal has now been lodged with the Planning Inspectorate.

Adam and Greenwood are the funeral directors chosen by the Coroner’s Court to cover Chelmsford and Maldon.

As well as the change of use, the firm wants to carry out minor internal remodelling, install a new rear door, create additional on site parking and put up signs.

A consultation period is taking place until February 13.
