A planning application to build homes on an historic boat yard has been opposed by Burnham Town Council.

Burnham Town Council discussed the application for 40 homes and office space at Petticrows Boatyard, The Quay, at their last meeting.

Three letters to the council, objecting to the proposal, listed flooding risk, job losses, overloading the sewage treatment plant and traffic movements as reasons to refuse the proposal.

Councillor Neil Pudney, who recalled the floods in 1953 and 1965, said: “Given the number of floods there are thoughout the country in the last 12 months, this is on a flood plain and near a very large sewage works.

“In view of this I cannot support it.”

Other councillors said they were concerned about the plans, saying they ‘fly in the face of the emerging LDP’ and there was no clear access route to the site.

They voted to refuse the proposal which will now progress to face Maldon District Council.
