Discussions are still ongoing to bring a Monday market to Maldon.
Maldon District Council had originally hoped to bring the High Street market to town this month.
A council spokesman said: “The council is working with a number of partners to bring a market to Maldon High Street.
“Discussions are on-going with transport providers, the county council and market operators to ensure when the market arrives it maximises the benefit to the town and does not create conflict with local transport and businesses operating in the area.
“We are working hard to bring the market forward in the first quarter of 2015 following the completion of the appropriate steps outlined above.”
An Essex County Council spokesman said: “Maldon District Council are yet to apply for a traffic regulation order for the part closure of Maldon High Street.
“We would need a formal application to close the road before making a decision on their request.
“They can however carry out the legal orders under their own powers with Essex County Council only being consulted.”
