Concerned residents have called for wheelie bins to be introduced in a bid to solve Maldon’s fox problems.

Maldon District Council currently issues residents with food waste caddies, but not the large black wheelie bins for general household waste, which are used by neighbouring Braintree district residents.

Sue Wyllie, of Heybridge, recently lost her hens to a fox attack.

She said: “I feel it is about time the council provided wheelie bins like other councils in Essex as they are obviously attracted by the bin bags and leave rubbish strewn all over Maldon."

Another resident, who asked not to be named, described the fox problem in Essex Road, Maldon, as “severe”.

A Maldon District Council spokesman said: “The council sympathises with the position and understands the difficulties that can be caused by urban foxes.

“However there is little that can be done to control these wild animals on a permanent basis."
