Burnham Carnival's magical illuminated procession takes place this Saturday (Sept 27).

The procession is set to draw crowds from far and wide when it takes place at 7.30pm from the clock tower.

During the day, there will also be plenty of entertainment for the whole family in the town centre, by the clock tower.

High Street will be closed from 9am to 10pm, from Chapel Road to Belvedere Road.

The crowning of carnival queen Tamara Cleverley and princesses Shannon O’Mahoney and Mae Sheppard will take place at 10am.

This will be followed by singing and dancing displays from Southminster Primary School, Epic Dance, St Mary’s Primary School and Burnham Primary School.

Watch out for lighthearted water-based fun from noon as teams from Essex Police’s marine unit, the fire brigade, RNLI and ambulance service battle it out.

Youngsters will also be treated to a classic show of Punch and Judy, juggling, tightrope walking and an energetic zumba display.

Morris dancers will be jingling their bells and musical entertainment will be provided by local singer Tom Newman Clark and the band, The Flying Hornets.

Back by popular demand will be carnival dancers Rampage, who will join the procession along with a steel band.

Of course, no carnival would be complete without some fancy dress.

There is no set theme for costumes as the judges will simply be looking for the best adult and child efforts.

Carnival committee chairman David Fagg said: “The procession is a real highlight.

“People come from far and wide for it.

“We’re hoping this year will be bigger and better."
