A library will be shutting for 25 days to install new techonology for visitors.

Southminster library is installing Radio Frequency Identification units which allow library users to check out, return and renew their items themselves.

Library assistants will then be free to help customers.

The units work by scanning the library card and following touch screen instructions.

Essex county councillor John Jowers, cabinet member for libraries, communities and planning, said: “We are confident that the new machines will make borrowing items from Essex libraries quicker and more convenient."

Southminster library will close at 5pm on September 4 and will reopen on October 9.
